The municipal councilor from the National Alternative Movement Party, Ion Onta, has been placed under house arrest for 30 days. He is accused in a fraud case with an estimated damage of over 3 million lei. The decision was announced on Thursday by the Chisinau Court, Ciocana headquarters, reports IPN.
According to the Prosecutor’s Office for Combating Organized Crime and Special Cases, he is accused of having convinced two people to invest in alleged real estate projects, promising them an annual return of 20%. According to the prosecutors, they would have transferred, in several installments, the total sum of 155,000 euros, equivalent to over 3 million lei, but the promised investments would not have existed.
The prosecutors specify that the investigations continue. On the other hand, Ion Onta rejects the accusations.
The National Alternative Movement Party has announced that it will not make a decision regarding the city councilor for the time being, and will await the outcome of the investigation.
