The prosecution requests the extension of the judicial control applied to the former head of the Legal Department of the Parliament, Ion Creanga, accused of treason. The court is set to rule on the motion on Friday, reports IPN.
During Wednesday’s meeting, the case prosecutor, Dumitru Stefirta, requested an extension of the preventive measure and asked that, in the event the defendant does not appear at the court sessions, a forced appearance of the latter could be ordered. The prosecution argues that the defense is trying to delay the examination of the case.
On the other hand, Ion Creanga’s lawyer, Vasile Florea, requested the dismissal of the motion, deeming it unfounded. Additionally, the defendant dismissed the prosecutor’s claims regarding the delay of the trial and stated that the request for the extension of the judicial control is not based on concrete facts.
At the same time, the court informed the defense that, according to the conclusions of the forensic medical examination, the accused is fit to participate in court hearings. The judges ordered the examination of the case in general procedure, with the commencement of the judicial investigation.
The former official is accused of treason and conspiracy against the state. According to prosecutors, during the period 2023-2024, he allegedly maintained correspondence and had clandestine meetings with an assistant to the military attaché of the Russian Federation Embassy in Chisinau. The former head of the Legal Department of the Parliament was detained in July 2024, when he allegedly received 500 dollars from a Russian official.
Ion Creanga pleads not guilty.
