Alexander Zverev and Ben Shelton will compete in the men’s final of the US Open, while Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka will face off in the ultimate act of the women’s competition. The four have won the semifinals held over the last two days at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York, reports IPN.
In the men’s semifinals, the German Alexander Zverev defeated the Russian Karen Khachanov in three sets, with a score of 6-3, 7-6, 7-6. Zverev scored 15 aces and won both tie-breaks. The American Ben Shelton overcame his compatriot Frances Tiafoe in four sets, scoring 4-6, 6-3, 6-3, 7-5, ending the match with 20 aces and five break points converted out of 11.
Shelton reaches the final act after, in the quarterfinals, he eliminated in five sets the trophy holder, Carlos Alcaraz.
In the women’s, Elena Rybakina overcame Coco Gauff in three sets, score 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. The player from Kazakhstan won 76% of the points played with the first service and converted four out of the six break balls. In the other semifinal, Aryna Sabalenka defeated the American Jessica Pegula in two sets, score 7-5, 6-2. The Belarusian achieved seven aces, capitalized on three out of the eight break balls and did not lose her service.
Thus, Rybakina and Sabalenka will battle for the US Open title. Sabalenka is the trophy holder and aims to defend her title.
