The League of Cities and Communes Party and the National Liberal Party have announced the initiation of the merger process, as a result of which a single political formation is to be constituted, which will retain the name of the National Liberal Party. The new formation aims to participate in the local elections of 2027, presidential elections of 2028, and parliamentary elections of 2029.
In a press conference at IPN, LOC co-chairman Alexandru Bujorean stated that the decision to merge with PNL was practically unanimously supported by the party’s leadership and members. According to him, LOC could have participated separately in the next elections, but the current name has a rather local and regional identity, which would limit the party’s prospects in the national elections.
According to him, the merger process is expected to last at least two months. The leadership structure of the resulting formation, as well as the individuals who will occupy the leadership roles, are to be determined by delegates at the congress. Representatives of the two parties have specified that the formula currently under discussion is merger by absorption, and the reorganized formation will bear the name National Liberal Party.
The General Secretary of the PNL, Ion Calmic, stated that the new political construction aims to expand the party’s agenda through a stronger emphasis on local public administration, community development, modernization of localities and improving the standard of living.
In turn, the municipal and district councilor from Orhei on behalf of LOC, Sergiu Aga, stated that the resulting formation aims to bring together political forces that support European integration and closeness to Romania. He read the joint political declaration, according to which PNL will contribute to the new structure through its liberal identity and organizational experience, and LOC – through the experience of local elected officials, territorial organizations and administrative capacity.
The common political program will include strengthening local autonomy and the decentralization process, modernizing public administration, supporting private initiative, reforming justice and education, developing infrastructure, European integration and deepening relations with Romania.
At the same time, the two formations do not rule out the expansion of the political project. Their representatives stated that they are in discussions with at least three formations and that there is openness to the co-optation of new partners. According to them, these must share the political orientation of the project and meet the criteria of integrity and professionalism.
