Maia Sandu and Péter Magyar discuss the expansion of economic relations between Moldova and Hungary

The expansion of trade exchanges between the Republic of Moldova and Hungary, as well as the European path, were discussed by President Maia Sandu and the Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar, during a telephone conversation, reports IPN.

Maia Sandu reaffirmed the interest of the Republic of Moldova in developing the strategic partnership with Hungary, initiated in 2020. In this context, the two officials discussed the opportunities to deepen economic cooperation and stimulate investments.

Another topic addressed was the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union. The head of state thanked Hungary for the support given to the country’s European path and reiterated the commitment of the authorities in Chisinau to reforms, modernization of institutions, and alignment with European standards.

On the agenda of the phone discussion was also the security situation in the region, affected by Russia’s war of aggression.

The head of the department within the Agency for Intervention and Payments for Agriculture, detained at the beginning of August in a case of influence trafficking, has been transferred to house arrest, reports IPN.

The prosecutors requested an extension of the preventive arrest for another 30 days, however, the court ordered the extension of the measure for 20 days. The decision was contested by both the Anti-Corruption Prosecutor’s Office and the defense. Subsequently, the appellate court partially admitted the defense’s appeal and replaced the preventive arrest measure with house arrest.

According to the National Anti-Corruption Center, the official allegedly received 130 thousand lei, claiming that he could influence the approval of a subsidy application submitted by a business agent.

During the investigation, law enforcement officials also documented the transfer of other sums of money to third parties. As a result of the searches carried out in the case, cash assets totaling 2.5 million lei were seized. The criminal investigation continues to establish all the circumstances and identify other individuals who might be involved.
