Survey: Half of Moldovans would vote for EU membership, support is slightly increasing

In the event of a referendum on the accession of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union, half of the citizens would vote in favor, while 35% would be against. The data is contained in the IMAS socio-political Barometer – June 2026. The study shows that, although the majority of respondents remain skeptical about accession by 2028, there is still a slight increase in optimism compared to the beginning of the year.

The General Director of IMAS, Doru Petruti, stated at a press conference at IPN that, when it comes to the foreign policy orientation of the Republic of Moldova, 44% of respondents support maintaining a balance between Russia and the European Union. At the same time, the pro-European option remains more clearly defined and gathers 34% of preferences, while the pro-Russian orientation is supported by 13% of participants.

Doru Petruti mentioned that there is an observed increase of about 4% in support for EU membership, a trend similar to the slight increase in support for unification with Romania, developments which he considers parallel. According to the survey, 34% of respondents would vote for unification with Romania, while 55% would oppose. In the case of NATO membership, 25% declare that they would support this option, while 58% declare themselves against.

Regarding the prospects of joining the European Union, 27% of respondents believe that the Republic of Moldova could become a member state by 2028, while 65% consider this unlikely. For the horizon of the year 2030, 43% of respondents consider accession possible, and 48% exclude it.

At the same time, 79% of participants believe that the Republic of Moldova should be treated separately from Ukraine in the European integration process, while only 12% support a joint advancement of the two states on this path.

The socio-political barometer was conducted between June 1-14 on a sample of 1,116 people from 86 localities. The maximum sampling error is ±3%. The survey was commissioned by Independent News (Romania).

The Moldovan firefighters stationed in Greece have participated in their first intervention to extinguish a vegetation fire. The mission took place in the town of Souroti in the Thessaloniki region, where Greek authorities requested additional support to extinguish several outbreaks, reports IPN.

According to the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, the team was mobilized Thursday morning and intervened alongside Greek firefighters to extinguish the fire. The Moldovan rescuers were divided into two teams, they extinguished the hotspots and checked the affected perimeter to prevent their reignition.

Subsequently, the firefighters returned to the operational base, where the fire trucks, equipment, and necessary reserves for potential interventions were checked.

Moldovan firefighters are participating, from July 14 to August 1, in a pre-positioning mission in Greece, organized through the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. The purpose of this mission is to support Greek authorities in managing vegetation and forest fires during the high-risk season.
