An Iranian commercial vessel was struck by a projectile on Sunday in the Strait of Hormuz, near Qeshm Island. One person died, and four others were injured. The Iranian authorities have not yet determined the type of projectile or who is behind the attack, reports Associated Press, quoted by IPN.
According to the international press, quoting the governor of Qeshm Island, the deceased was part of the ship’s crew, consisting of ten members. The Iranian official described the attack as a terrorist one, without specifying who would be responsible. Meanwhile, the British Maritime Trade Operations center announced that, following the strike, a fire broke out on board the ship, and local authorities intervened for the evacuation of those on board.
The incident occurred a day before a meeting during which Tehran is expected to inform regional states about the measures it intends to adopt for managing naval traffic through the Strait of Hormuz. Qeshm Island is located approximately 22 kilometers from the port city of Bandar Abbas and holds a strategic position for controlling traffic through the strait.
