A criminal network specialized in organizing illegal migration was dismantled by the Border Police in cooperation with the General Inspectorate for Migration and under the coordination of the Prosecutor’s Office in Briceni. The group was made up of Moldovan citizens and carried out illegal border crossings to the European Union by migrants from Nepal, IPN reports.
The authorities report that those involved had previously been documented and arrested by law enforcement authorities in Hungary, where they were similarly active. After serving their sentences, they were deported to Moldova. Here, they resumed their criminal activity, supported by accomplices from abroad. They targeted Nepalese citizens who had legal work visas in Moldova but wanted to reach Western Europe illegally.
According to the investigation, the migrants paid between €2,000 and €5,000 to be helped to cross the border fraudulently. Border guards detained a member of the network who was transporting four Nepalese nationals near Lipcani. The group was going to cross the Prut river in an inflatable boat, but were intercepted before they reached Romania.
The operation continued and three more suspects were subsequently apprehended in the same area while preparing another attempted illegal border crossing. In total, four members of the network were arrested and two cars used in the illegal actions were seized and are to be confiscated.
Prosecutors have opened a criminal case for organizing illegal migration by an organized criminal group. The suspects face up to seven years in prison if found guilty. The investigation is continuing to document the network’s entire activity and to identify possible accomplices abroad.
