A cyclist was detained by the police and is set to be fined 5000 lei after he was caught riding his bicycle under the influence of alcohol, reports IPN.
The man, aged 45, caught the attention of the police because he was moving chaotically on a street in the city of Donduseni. The Dräger device indicated a concentration of 2.38 mg/l alcohol in his exhaled air – a “dangerous record,” notes the General Inspectorate of Police.
For reference, in the Republic of Moldova, a blood alcohol level higher than 0.35 mg/l in exhaled air indicates a high degree of intoxication. According to the law, cyclists are considered vehicle operators and can be penalized if they are caught riding while intoxicated.
The number of road accidents involving bicycles and scooters is on the rise. According to data from the National Public Safety Inspectorate, in the first five months of this year, there were 84 such accidents, resulting in four deaths and over 70 injured individuals.
