Over 60 honorary consuls of the Republic of Moldova discussed proposals for promoting the country abroad, including the launch of a joint international campaign. The discussions took place within the framework of public hearings organized by the Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Policy, reports IPN.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mihai Popsoi, stated that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs aims to expand the tools for promoting the Republic of Moldova as a destination for business and investment, highlighting the role of honorary consuls in this process. “You have serious capabilities to promote the Republic of Moldova, our products and to facilitate investments in our country”, the minister told the consuls present at the hearings.

The Chairwoman of the Parliamentary Commission for Foreign Policy, Doina Gherman, mentioned that representatives of the Republic of Moldova abroad can contribute in areas such as agriculture, green energy, tourism and the IT sector. She emphasized the need for closer collaboration between Parliament, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the network of honorary consuls to contribute to the country’s development.

The Honorary Consul of the Republic of Moldova in Brazil, Flavio Mendes Bitelman, has proposed the periodic organization of experience exchanges between the representatives of the consular network. According to him, they could share examples of good practices from the countries where they operate and identify ways in which they can support the Republic of Moldova.

Valentina Ceban, honorary consul of the Republic of Moldova in Zurich, Swiss Confederation, advocated for online sessions every two to three months, dedicated to the exchange of experience and identification of best practices. She also suggested the implementation of joint campaigns, with a unique slogan, to increase visibility and promote the image of the Republic of Moldova at an international level.

The hearings were organized in the context of the meeting of the honorary consuls of the Republic of Moldova, held by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 2, within the framework of Moldova Business Week 2026. Representatives of the Republic of Moldova from Brazil, Lebanon, Switzerland, Belgium, the Kingdom of Denmark, and other countries are participating in the meeting.

A former kindergarten director has been convicted of fraud and forgery in public documents, being fined 72,500 lei. According to the General Prosecutor’s Office, she signed orders and payrolls for employees who did not show up for work or worked fewer hours, but received full salaries and bonuses. The woman admitted her guilt, reports IPN.

The General Prosecutor’s Office specifies that, in one case, an employee on child care leave was fictitiously recalled to work. Based on false timesheets, she was paid 48,513 lei, and after withdrawing the money from the card, the sum was transferred directly to the director.

In another case, an employee was paid 32,683 lei for hours that would not have been worked. Out of this amount, 16,341 lei subsequently went to the director.

The prosecutors also say that the former director indicated in the documents the activity of some employees who, in reality, were actually non-officially employed people, including a relative of hers. In another episode, a person who did not work in the kindergarten was calculated salaries and other payments of approximately 51,566 lei. According to the evidence, the activity indicated in the documents was carried out by her sister.

The former director, who admitted her guilt, requested the examination of the case based on the evidence administered during the criminal investigation. In addition to the fine, the court prohibited her from holding certain positions or carrying out certain activities for three years.

Issues related to public finances can fuel inflation and, over time, can slow down the economy, and the effects can be stronger if central banks do not react sufficiently. The chief economist of the Bank for International Settlements, Denis Gorea, spoke about these risks at the conference “Fiscal Space and Monetary Anchoring in the Context of Accelerated Integration”, organized by the National Bank of Moldova, reports IPN.

According to the economist, imbalances in public finances can make state loans more expensive and can put pressure on the national currency, which can subsequently lead to price increases and a slowdown in economic activity. After a short-term boost, industrial production may begin to decline, while inflation remains high. The effects are stronger when central banks react insufficiently to inflationary pressures.

Denis Gorea drew attention to the fact that many countries continue to grapple with high levels of public debt and budget deficits. Pressures on budgets are amplified by an aging population, the need for new public investments, and increased defense spending. At the same time, states allocate more and more resources for the payment of interest on public debt.

For the Republic of Moldova, the economist emphasized the necessity of maintaining public debt at a sustainable level and accumulating budgetary reserves during favorable periods. At the same time, investments that contribute to the development of the economy must be protected.

Regarding central banks, Denis Gorea emphasized the importance of their independence and credibility, as well as a prompt reaction when price pressures arise. According to him, delaying measures can make managing potential future economic shocks more difficult.

The conference “Fiscal Space and Monetary Anchoring in the Context of Accelerated Integration” takes place from October 1-2 and is organized by NBM, the National Bank of Romania and the Bank of France.
