Voters taking part in the new local elections and the local referendum on November 1 will not be able to use digital versions of their identity documents stored in the government’s EVO digital wallet to identify themselves at polling stations. The Central Electoral Commission has decided to suspend this provision following cybersecurity incidents targeting the state’s digital public services, IPN reports.
Voters will therefore be required to present their physical identity documents to election officials, in line with existing procedures.
According to the CEC, the decision was made to prevent potential risks associated with the use of digital identification mechanisms.
The Commission notes that it remains in dialogue with the e-Governance Agency to enable the use of digital voter identification in future elections, once security checks have been completed and the services in question have been confirmed to be secure.
Elections are taking place today in several localities across the country, where residents will elect mayors, choose a new local council or vote in a local referendum. Polling stations will remain open until 09:00 PM.
