A Romanian journalist has been banned from entering the Transnistrian region for three years

Romanian journalist Alex Craiu has been banned from entering the Transnistrian region for three years. He says the measure was imposed after he published a report on the situation in Tiraspol. Craiu says he learned of the ban when he tried to enter the region and was handed an official notice informing him of the three-year entry ban, IPN reports.

“Barring a journalist who asks uncomfortable questions is a form of censorship that comes as no surprise in Tiraspol’s case. The decision was only a matter of time, even though I have never violated the rules for entering or leaving the region,” Alex Craiu said.

The Bureau for Reintegration Policies commented on the case, condemning the restrictions on the journalist’s access and describing the measure as yet another abuse by the Tiraspol authorities.

According to the Bureau, the case demonstrates that the Tiraspol regime and the so-called local security forces continue to censor information, restricting the work of journalists who report on the realities of life in the region and the human rights situation.

The institution says it will continue to call for journalists’ access to the Transnistrian region to be restored through dialogue between Chisinau and Tiraspol. The BPR reiterates that freedom of movement within the country and freedom of the media are guaranteed by the Constitution and international law.

The year 2027 will be designated the Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici Year of Culture in Chisinau. The municipality will also take over the organization of the “Two Twin Hearts” Festival starting next year. Chisinau Mayor Ion Ceban made the announcement at a commemorative event marking the 34th anniversary of the artists’ deaths, IPN reports.

The commemorative event held on Friday near the monument to the two artists brought together a crowd who attended a recital of music and poetry and laid flowers at the monument in memory of the performers.

The mayor noted that a series of activities and events dedicated to the two artists would be held as part of the Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici Cultural Year.

Ion Ceban recalled that last year, following extensive renovations, the Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici Centre for Culture and Art opened near the square named in their honour. The project was carried out in collaboration with the artists’ family.

The mayor stated that the municipality would continue to support projects dedicated to preserving the memory of the two performers and introducing their work to younger generations.

Ion and Doina Aldea-Teodorovici died during the night of October 29–30, 1992, in a road accident near Cosereni, in Romania’s Ialomita County.

Local government reform is being rushed through without an adequate assessment of the responsibilities of the different tiers of government. In terms of the principles governing local administration, services are moving further away from citizens, while the principle of subsidiarity is losing its importance. Viorel Rusu, an expert with the Congress of Local Authorities of Moldova, made these remarks during the public debate “Regions Instead of Districts: Who Will Gain Real Power and Control over Budgets—the Consolidated Regions or Municipal Authorities?”, organized by the IPN News Agency.

Viorel Rusu noted that abolishing district councils could weaken the representation of communities’ interests at the regional level. He explained that authorities directly elected by the public are responsible for safeguarding local needs and interests, including those related to economic and cultural ties between towns and villages. In his view, simply merging these communities without taking such ties into account could undermine communities that have developed over time.

Commenting on the proposed threshold of 3,000 residents for the reorganization of localities, Viorel Rusu said it lacked sufficient scientific and demographic justification. He recalled that the Republic of Moldova’s 2002 Law on Administrative and Territorial Organization allowed an administrative-territorial unit to be established with at least 1,500 residents, and that this figure served as a guideline and could be adjusted to reflect the specific characteristics of the community.

The expert believes that population size should not be the sole criterion for merging municipalities. In his view, the assessment should also take into account their capacity to provide public services, economic conditions, the number of jobs, and the demographic makeup of the communities.

Viorel Rusu also stated that the reorganization of local government should be based on voluntary mergers of municipalities rather than imposed measures. In his view, a reform of this scale must be carried out over an extended period, have the consensus of all parties involved, including local communities, and receive financial support.
