Prosecutors have launched a criminal investigation into the cyberattack that compromised the personal data of 750,000 citizens. Violina Moraru, spokesperson for the Prosecutor General’s Office, confirmed the information to IPN, the news agency reports.

The case was opened by the Chisinau Municipal Prosecutor’s Office on reasonable suspicion of violations of privacy and unlawful disclosure of data. Investigative proceedings are ongoing.

The cyberattack on government digital infrastructure took place between October 19 and 23, hackers targeted approximately one million personal identification numbers, and data associated with about 750,000 individuals was accessed and exfiltrated without authorization. Following this attack, the Government announced the departure of Nicoleta Colomeet, the director of the e-Governance Agency. Meanwhile, the Parliamentary Committee on National Security, Defense and Public Order will hold hearings, and the Presidency has announced that Maia Sandu is convening the Supreme Security Council.

More than 60 public services have been restored and are now accessible through the evo.gov.md portal following the cyberattack on government infrastructure. Another 21 services, managed by various providers, remain temporarily unavailable, the e-Governance Agency announced, IPN reports.

According to the institution, the cyber threat persists, with attempted attacks on government digital infrastructure continuing to be detected. These attacks seek to identify vulnerabilities that could be exploited to disrupt the delivery of public services. So far, checks have found no further instances of unauthorized data extraction.

AGE, together with the Information Technology and Cyber Security Service and the Cybersecurity Agency, continues to protect infrastructure and gradually restore services. The 21 services that remain unavailable will be brought back online once security checks have been completed.

Meanwhile, the authorities are reviewing the data obtained without authorization to identify those affected and determine what information was involved in each case. Lists are being compiled by data category and checked to remove duplicates and resolve inconsistencies.

AGE is also working to establish a mechanism for notifying affected citizens individually.
