Marina Tauber’s lawyer, Sergiu Moraru, says he will appeal the sentence sentencing his client to seven years and six months in prison. According to him, the entire accusation is baseless, and the admission of guilt is “clearly unrealistic and unfounded”, IPN reports.
“Everyone understands that neither Tauber nor Gutul (whom he represented in court) financed the Shor Party. They did not have the financial means to do so. Tauber submitted his annual financial disclosure statement every year,” said the lawyer after the hearing at the Chisinau District Court, Buiucani headquarters.
Sergiu Moraru stated that the court gave priority to the “invented” version of the prosecutors, a version which, he asserts, the defense dismantled during the trial.
When asked about the location of the deputy, the lawyer stated that he did not know. “I don’t have such responsibilities. I discuss as much as necessary”, avoiding to confirm or deny the information regarding Marina Tauber’s departure from the country. At the same time, the defender pointed out that his client expected such a decision, but hoped for a “verdict in accordance with the truth”.
On the other hand, prosecutor Roman Porubin mentioned that the court has upheld the charges brought by the prosecution on all four counts. “The court found the charges brought by the prosecutors to be substantiated”, he stated, noting that the cumulative sentence imposed falls within the limits provided by law.
“All the provisions correspond to the demands made by the prosecutors. We will acquaint ourselves with the verdict and will subsequently announce an official position on behalf of the institution”, added the prosecutor.
Marina Tauber, affiliated with the fugitive Ilan Shor, was sentenced today to 7 years and 6 months of imprisonment, through partial accumulation of penalties. She was found guilty of falsifying reports on campaign and party financing, accepting illegal funding from an organized criminal group, as well as interfering with the administration of justice.
