The Republic of Moldova must continue democratic reforms and strengthen its relations with European states to advance on the path of European integration. The statement belongs to Markus Wiechel, Swedish deputy and vice-president of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, in an interview for IPN.
According to the Swedish official, the Republic of Moldova has made significant progress in recent years, and this needs to be more actively communicated to European partners. In his opinion, diplomatic contacts and constant dialogue with European leaders are essential for strengthening the country’s image and supporting its European path.
Markus Wiechel appreciated the solidarity shown by the Republic of Moldova following the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, noting that the support given to Ukrainian refugees has contributed to improving the country’s perception in Europe. At the same time, he believes that the rapprochement of the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine on the path of European integration represents an advantage for both states.
The Vice President of the PACE expressed optimism regarding the European future of the Republic of Moldova, emphasizing, however, that success depends on the continuation of reforms and respect for the principles of the rule of law. According to him, one of the main challenges for the country remains the influence of the Russian Federation in the region.
When asked what reform the Republic of Moldova cannot afford to miss, Markus Wiechel highlighted the need for strengthening democracy and fundamental values. He reminded that the support offered by Sweden over the past decades has aimed at developing a prosperous society, based on democracy, equality and respect for fundamental rights.
The Swedish official stated that he would like to find a more economically developed Republic of Moldova in five years, better integrated into Europe, and with stronger trade relations with European states.
