In Moldova, 209 people died in road accidents last year, and in the first three quarters of this year, another 134 people lost their lives. The data was presented by the National Bureau of Statistics on the occasion of the World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims, marked annually on the third Sunday of November, reports IPN.
The third quarter of this year was marked by an increase in the number of people injured in accidents: 840 individuals, compared to 696 in the same period last year.
Out of the 209 deaths recorded last year, 62 were pedestrians, 102 were car drivers and passengers, 11 were cyclists, and 20 were motorcycle drivers and passengers. In total, there were 2,375 accidents last year, most of them involving cars.
The World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims was officially recognized by the UN General Assembly in 2005, being marked annually on the third Sunday of November. Globally, road accidents represent a major public health issue, causing approximately 1.3 million deaths annually.
