The water consumed by residents in some areas of Balti municipality is not potable, but technical water, claims the city’s mayor, Alexandr Petkov, who is calling for urgent interventions to remedy the situation. According to the mayor, the conclusion is based on the results of analyses carried out in an independent laboratory in Iasi, later confirmed by tests conducted by specialists from the local Public Health Centre, IPN reports.
At a press conference, Alexandr Petkov said that the analysis results indicated the presence of certain substances, including nitrites, which raise questions about water quality. The mayor stated that the problem does not appear to come from the water supplied through the Soroca-Balti pipeline, but from within the municipality’s water supply system.
In his opinion, the operator responsible for the water service must inform consumers about the quality of the water supplied and present solutions to remedy the situation.
According to Alexandr Petkov, local authorities have already begun installing water filters in educational institutions. At the same time, the mayor urged residents to avoid consuming tap water without additional treatment until the situation is clarified.
The mayor announced that he had contacted the Prosecutor’s Office and would request Parliament’s involvement in monitoring the case. He believes the situation must be investigated in detail, and those responsible for any possible irregularities must be held accountable under the law.
