The official reserve assets reached 5.45 billion euros at the end of September, increasing by over 39 million euros compared to August. According to the National Bank of Moldova, since the beginning of the year, the reserves have increased by approximately 349 million euros, reports IPN.

According to BNM, the increase in September was mainly due to the appreciation of the currencies that make up the reserves against the euro, with an impact of 59.85 million euros, as well as the income from the management of foreign exchange reserves, which amounted to 13.61 million euros.

At the same time, the revenues in favor of the Ministry of Finance amounted to 5.76 million euros. Out of this amount, 4.68 million euros represented loans and grants for investment projects, while 1.08 million euros – budget support provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

On the other hand, reserves have been reduced by payments for the external public debt service, amounting to nearly 19 million euros, and by the revaluation of securities in the investment portfolio, which generated a decrease of 14.43 million euros. The payments of the Ministry of Finance constituted another 4.3 million euros.

Other reductions were generated by the net outflows related to the mandatory foreign currency reserves of licensed banks, amounting to 1.35 million euros, as well as by the outflows from the accounts of the Office for the Management of External Assistance Programs – 700 thousand euros.

Two centralized irrigation systems in the Republic of Moldova will be rehabilitated and modernized, and approximately 6,900 hectares of agricultural land will have access to irrigation infrastructure. The project’s funding amounts to around 130 million euros, of which nearly 13 million euros will be grants. The government has approved the signing of the Loan Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, reports IPN.

In the first stage, the irrigation system “Masivul Causeni”, located in the Ștefan Vodă district, which serves approximately two thousand hectares of agricultural land, will be rehabilitated. The modernized infrastructure will subsequently be transferred to the management of the “Kizil” Water Users Association for Irrigation.

And approximately 4,900 hectares will benefit from modernized infrastructure through the rehabilitation of the “Puhacenii de Sus” system, located in the Criuleni and Anenii Noi districts. The system will subsequently be managed by the “Dubasarii Vechi” and “Aqua Terra Delacau” Water User Associations for Irrigation, depending on the serviced area.

The first tranche of financing, worth 62.875 million euros, includes an EBRD loan of 49.8 million euros, an EBRD grant of 1.08 million euros, an EU concessional loan of 7.2 million euros, and an EU grant of 4.8 million euros. This money will be used for the rehabilitation of the two irrigation systems.

The second tranche, of 67.1 million euros, is not yet committed. This includes a EBRD loan of 53.1 million euros, a EBRD grant of 1.5 million euros, a concessional EU loan of 7.5 million euros and a EU grant of 5 million euros. The money is to be directed towards other centralized irrigation systems that will prove feasible for rehabilitation following a feasibility study.

The authorities specify that the modernization of the systems will provide farmers with more secure access to water sources for irrigation and will contribute to reducing the vulnerability of agriculture to drought and the effects of climate change. Currently, in the Republic of Moldova, nine irrigation infrastructure rehabilitation projects are being implemented.
