Energy security remains a central pillar of the partnership between the United States and the Republic of Moldova, in the context of regional developments and sanctions imposed on Russian energy companies. The statement was made to IPN by the Deputy Assistant Secretary of State of the USA, Christopher Smith.
The American official emphasized that energy has been a major component of bilateral cooperation for many years, especially after Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. According to him, reducing dependence on Russian oil and gas is a strategic priority not only for the Republic of Moldova, but for all of Europe.
Christopher Smith highlighted the US investment of 130 million dollars in the Straseni-Gutinas power line, a project that contributes to the diversification of energy sources and the strengthening of the energy security of the Republic of Moldova.
Referring to the information about a possible agreement for the sale of Lukoil’s international assets to the American company Carlyle, a transaction currently under approval by the US regulatory authorities, Smith pointed out that Washington will closely collaborate, through the Treasury Department, with investors interested in this sector.
According to the American official, the involvement of American companies in the energy sector of the Republic of Moldova or the region would mean more reliable and safer energy sources, an essential element for the country’s economic development and for the stability of regional energy markets.
