The UN Security Council has adopted a resolution condemning Iran’s attacks against its regional neighbors, amid escalating violence in the Middle East. The document was proposed by Bahrain on behalf of the Gulf Cooperation Council. An alternative resolution proposal, presented by Russia, did not gather the necessary number of votes to be adopted, reports IPN.
The resolution condemns the “serious attacks” of Iran against Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Jordan. According to a statement from the UN, the signatories reiterated their support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and political independence of these countries.
The Council has called for the immediate cessation of attacks against residential areas and civilian objects.
The resolution was adopted with 13 votes in favor and two abstentions, from China and Russia.
The resolution project proposed by Russia has failed and received four votes in favor from China, Pakistan, Somalia, and Russia, two votes against from the USA and Latvia, and nine abstentions from Bahrain, Colombia, Congo, Denmark, France, Greece, Liberia, Panama, United Kingdom. The delegate from Moscow stated that the positions of many members of the Council are dictated by short-term political interests and block solidarity.
The UN Security Council resolution was adopted in the context of the war triggered on February 28 by the air attacks of Israel and the USA on Iran, which have already spread to nearly twelve countries in the Middle East region.
