Trafficker sentenced to 5 years in prison. She sold women to Turks for sexual exploitation

A 45-year-old Moldovan woman, convicted in a human trafficking case, was sentenced to five years in prison by the Chisinau Buiucani District Court. According to the investigation, the woman recruited several young Moldovan girls and sent them to Turkey, where they were sexually exploited, IPN reports.

Prosecutors say that in February 2018, the defendant, who was in Turkey at the time, persuaded a woman to come to her, promising her a job with good pay. She paid for her airfare and, once she arrived in the city of Kushadasi, the victim was sheltered in an apartment, where she was forced into prostitution for two months.

A month later, another woman was duped in the same way. She was promised a job as a cleaner in Italy, but was sent to Turkey on the pretext that the flight was a stopover. When she arrived in Istanbul with no resources, she was taken to Kushadasi, where she was sold to people of Turkish origin.

The woman admitted her guilt. The sentence can be appealed to the Chisinau Court of Appeal within 15 days. If the judgment is upheld, she will serve her sentence in a semi-closed women’s prison. She will also be banned for five years from holding positions or activities related to the employment of others.

The former president of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, stated that the changes regarding the competences of the Gagauz autonomy in organizing elections do not represent an infringement on its status. “Gagauzia does not have enemies in Moldova,” Tănase declared in the show “Teritoria Svobodi” with Lilia Burakovski, reports IPN.

Alexandru Tanase also stated that Comrat is being “brazenly manipulated”. “I am very sorry that, after 30 years, other political parties are not normally represented there, and pro-Moscow oriented politicians control the situation in the autonomy”, clarified the former president of the Constitutional Court.

In his opinion, this is a backlog of Chisinau, for which the country will pay a high price due to the ignorance of the situation in the region.

He mentioned that, most likely, legislative changes will be made, according to which Chisinau will designate the electoral bodies itself that will organize the elections in Gagauzia – on the date set by the Popular Assembly.

“Gagauzia has no enemy in the Republic of Moldova. There is no politician – not even the most marginal – who would say that autonomy should be abolished or that certain competencies should be reduced,” concluded the former president of the Constitutional Court.
