The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and France have agreed for the first time to coordinate their use of nuclear weapons in the event of an attack. The announcement was made in London by British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron at the conclusion of the bilateral summit, reports IPN.

The two leaders have signed the Northwood Declaration. The document will ensure that, in the event they are attacked, their adversaries know there will be a “response from the two nations”, declared Keir Starmer.

Emmanuel Macron explained that the decision responds to a “much more threatening climate” and mentioned that both states cannot imagine a scenario in which an attack against Europe would not provoke a joint reaction from the United Kingdom and France.

At the same time, the two countries agreed to establish a joint structure, the Nuclear Supply Group, to manage their collaboration in the field of atomic capacities and operations.

“Our states remain independent and sovereign, but we have mutually provided the means, when necessary, to respond together to the threatening environment we face”, said the French president.
