The savings of the population of the Republic of Moldova reached 26.5% of the Gross Domestic Product in the second quarter of 2026, the highest level recorded so far, while the loans contracted by citizens rose to 18.3% of the GDP. The data was presented by the economic expert Veaceslav Ionita, reports IPN.
According to the analysis, the balance of the population’s savings increased from 89.8 billion lei at the end of 2025 to about 97 billion lei in the second quarter of 2026. During the same period, the balance of bank and non-bank loans reached 66.9 billion lei, compared to 60.7 billion lei at the end of last year.
The ratio of population loans to GDP increased from 12.1% in 2023 to 18.3% in the second quarter of 2026. Out of the total loans granted to citizens, 51.2 billion lei were bank loans, and 15.6 billion lei were non-bank loans.
At the same time, saving through alternative instruments is gaining ground. The balance of state securities held by individuals has reached approximately 978 million lei, an increase of 50.4% compared to the end of 2025. However, Veaceslav Ioniță points out that a significant part of the population’s savings and loans remains outside the formal financial system and gives as examples the money kept at home and informal loans between relatives or friends.
