Starting from October 1st, a new road tariff system comes into effect in Romania. The cost of the vignette, mandatory for all vehicles traveling on the roads of the neighboring state, will be calculated based on the pollution standard of the car, and in the case of trucks, the TollRO system is introduced, which calculates the fee based on the kilometers traveled and the pollution standard, reports IPN.
The measure is assumed through the PNRR, the National Recovery and Resilience Plan agreed by Romania with the European Union. For vehicles up to 3.5 tons, the new tariff will be set based on the vehicle category, the period of use of the road network, and the class of pollutant emissions, so that two cars from the same category, but with different pollution standards, can pay different amounts. The mechanism will apply the “polluter pays” principle.
At the same time, for freight vehicles with a total mass of over 3.5 tons, the TollRo system comes into effect, which will set the fee based on the number of kilometers traveled on the road network in Romania and the pollution class.
The vignettes issued according to the old legislation will cease to be valid from October 1, with the exception of those issued for vehicles up to 3.5 tons, which can be used until the expiration date. Vehicles over 3.5 tons intended for the transportation of people and goods will, however, be taxed according to the TollRO system.
