From 2027, rental services for electric scooters will be banned in Brussels. According to the authorities of the Brussels region, the decision is motivated by the increasing number of accidents as well as the use of these vehicles in criminal activities, reports IPN, citing Brusselstime.
According to regional authorities, traffic is becoming increasingly difficult to manage. In 2025, 666 people were reported injured in accidents involving electric scooters, representing a 26% increase from the previous year. In addition to road safety risks, officials also complain about scooters being abandoned or parked improperly, which hampers pedestrian traffic.
The regional government also invokes the fact that these vehicles are increasingly used in the commission of crimes, including by drug trafficking networks. At the same time, bicycle rental services will continue to operate in Brussels, being considered an easier to manage alternative.
Due to numerous accidents, electric scooters have been banned in recent years in other European capitals such as Paris, Madrid, and Prague.
