The province of Alberta will organize a referendum on separation from Canada. The announcement was made by the provincial premier, Danielle Smith, who mentioned that the plebiscite will take place on October 19, reports IPN.
The decision comes after the submission of two citizen petitions, one advocating for separation from Canada, which over 300 thousand people have signed, and the other arguing for Alberta to remain a Canadian province, a petition that has gathered over 400 thousand signatures.
The Premier of the province, Danielle Smith, mentioned that she will vote against separation, and this is also the position of the government and the provincial parliament. According to the Canadian Constitution, the separation of a province can only take place after the organization of two referendums, one consultative and the other mandatory.
In the province of Alberta, the richest in Canada, live approximately 5 million out of over 41 million Canadians. It is the province with the highest salaries and the lowest taxes in the entire country, and contributes 16% to the country’s gross domestic product.
