The INFO LIVE Foundation successfully implemented the project “Supporting the media and strengthening the democratic development of the Republic of Moldova after the 2025 parliamentary elections”.

Chisinau, Republic of Moldova — Between October 15 and December 31, 2025, the INFO LIVE Foundation successfully implemented the project “Media advocacy and strengthening the democratic development of the Republic of Moldova after the 2025 parliamentary elections”, an initiative dedicated to supporting independent media and strengthening democratic resilience in the post-electoral context.

The project was structured in two complementary components, designed to respond to the challenges faced by the media sector and democratic society in the Republic of Moldova. The first component aimed at organizing an advocacy visit to the European Union institutions in Brussels, with the aim of supporting independent media institutions, both at national and regional levels. The visit aimed to promote a strategic approach to supporting the media, focused on strengthening economic sustainability, the continuous development of editorial offices and increasing local media production capacities. The second component consisted of the participation of a group of representatives of NGOs and media from the Republic of Moldova in the international roundtable “After the Vote: Lessons Learned from Electoral Security and Energy Independence in Strengthening Moldova’s Sovereignty”, held in Washington, D.C., as well as in organizing several related thematic meetings.

The context of the project implementation was marked by the intense electoral course of the Republic of Moldova in the last three years, a period in which the country went through three major electoral cycles, with a significant impact on the strategic direction of European integration. Obtaining the status of a candidate state to the European Union has strengthened public optimism, but the media sector continues to face major structural challenges, such as the decline of the advertising market, regulations lacking strategic vision, the dominant presence of Russian televisions in the audiovisual space and the use of the online environment for propaganda and disinformation by actors hostile to the constitutional order.

During the advocacy visit to Brussels, the INFO LIVE Foundation collaborated with the Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the European Union to organize meetings with European officials. The Moldovan delegation brought together representatives of national media institutions in Chisinau, as well as regional media from the north and south of the country, including from the Gagauz Autonomous Region. The discussions addressed key topics such as the activity of the media during the electoral campaign, regulations on election coverage, post-electoral conclusions, the impact of media sources from the Russian Federation, the intensification of propaganda and disinformation, the need to review economic regulations in the media field to eliminate monopolies and create a fair competitive market, as well as the reorientation of donor support towards sustainability and the development of national media production.

The second component of the project, held in Washington, D.C., included the participation of Moldovan representatives in the roundtable “After the Vote: Lessons Learned from Electoral Security and Energy Independence in Strengthening Moldova’s Sovereignty”, an event that brought together the Ambassador of the Republic of Moldova to the United States, members of the US Congressional staff, Moldovan experts and representatives of the German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) leadership. The discussions facilitated an in-depth analysis of emerging challenges to the sovereignty, security and democratic resilience of the Republic of Moldova, highlighting lessons learned from the recent electoral cycle, evidence of external interference, progress made in the field of energy independence and regional stability, as well as opportunities to strengthen cooperation between the Republic of Moldova and the United States of America to defend democracy and secure national sovereignty.

By implementing this project, the INFO LIVE Foundation contributed to increasing the international visibility of the challenges and needs of the media in the Republic of Moldova, to strengthening the dialogue with European and transatlantic partners and to promoting sustainable solutions for the development of an independent, resilient and public interest-oriented media sector.

This project was carried out with the support of the Black Sea Trust for Regional Cooperation – a Project of the German Marshall Fund of the United States.

The former president of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, stated that the changes regarding the competences of the Gagauz autonomy in organizing elections do not represent an infringement on its status. “Gagauzia does not have enemies in Moldova,” Tănase declared in the show “Teritoria Svobodi” with Lilia Burakovski, reports IPN.

Alexandru Tanase also stated that Comrat is being “brazenly manipulated”. “I am very sorry that, after 30 years, other political parties are not normally represented there, and pro-Moscow oriented politicians control the situation in the autonomy”, clarified the former president of the Constitutional Court.

In his opinion, this is a backlog of Chisinau, for which the country will pay a high price due to the ignorance of the situation in the region.

He mentioned that, most likely, legislative changes will be made, according to which Chisinau will designate the electoral bodies itself that will organize the elections in Gagauzia – on the date set by the Popular Assembly.

“Gagauzia has no enemy in the Republic of Moldova. There is no politician – not even the most marginal – who would say that autonomy should be abolished or that certain competencies should be reduced,” concluded the former president of the Constitutional Court.
