The Dniester is essential for human health, agriculture, the economy, energy, and community safety, and protecting it must remain a constant priority for everyone. This message was conveyed by President Maia Sandu on Dniester Day, which is celebrated annually on the last Sunday of May, according to IPN.
“The crisis in March, triggered by Russia’s aggression against Ukraine, has shown just how important solidarity and the ability to act together are in difficult times. Government institutions, experts on the ground, international partners, and civil society have all contributed to managing one of the most complex situations in recent years,” the head of state noted.
Environment Minister Gheorghe Hajder states that protecting the Dniester must be reflected in concrete actions, not just in statements. This year’s crisis has highlighted the close connection between people and nature. He urged local authorities and residents along the riverbanks to get involved in cleanup efforts, emphasizing that the Dniester means water, life, agriculture, and safety for communities.
At the same time, in a message, UNDP Moldova draws attention to the growing pressures on the Dniester River, noting that pollution, climate change, and the uncontrolled use of water resources are affecting the ecosystem. “On Dniester Day, we are reminded that water is not an inexhaustible resource. It is our duty to protect it and treat it with respect,” the message states.
At the same time, UNDP released the documentary “Lower Dniester: The Language of Nature,” which focuses on the biodiversity and landscapes of the “Lower Dniester” Nature Reserve and was produced with the support of environmental organizations on both banks of the river.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs also issued a message on the occasion of Dniester Day, recalling the interventions in March, when the river was affected by pollution from harmful substances. The ministry urges citizens to protect this resource, emphasizing that every action counts, from keeping the riverbanks clean to using water responsibly.
Dniester Day has been celebrated in the Republic of Moldova on the last Sunday of May since 2008.
