The British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, has announced his resignation from the position of Government Head and from the leadership of the Labour Party. He justified his decision by the loss of support from the party. Starmer mentioned that he will ensure the interim until the election of a new party leader, who will automatically take over the government leadership, reports IPN.
The announcement was made during a statement held Monday morning, after Keir Starmer had a phone conversation with King Charles III to officially inform him about his decision. The Prime Minister specified that he requested the National Executive Committee of the Labour Party to establish a schedule for the election of his successor, the nomination process set to begin on July 9th.
The new leader of the party should be confirmed by the end of the parliamentary vacation, on July 16th. If there are multiple candidates, the process will be extended, but there will be enough time for the party leader’s election before the legislature resumes its activities in September.
British political analysts and the press are touting Andy Burnham, former minister and current mayor of Manchester, as the favourite to take over the leadership of the Labour Party. Keir Starmer has emphasized that he will offer his full support to the future prime minister and will do everything possible to ensure a smooth transition of power.
