Our Party wants to establish a “backup” airport in Marculesti for the one in Chisinau

The political party “Our Party” assumes, as a priority campaign objective, the creation of the country’s second International Airport, in Marculesti. According to the party, this is expected to become a “reserve” airport for the one in Chisinau, reports IPN.

The party representatives emphasize that, in the last three decades, no investments have been made for the modernization of the Mărculești airport terminal. The airport’s runway allows the landing of cargo planes, so there would have only been a need for infrastructure investments for it to be put back into operation.

The leader of the party, Renato Usatii, asserts that, through the implementation of this project, passengers from the north of the Republic of Moldova will no longer need to travel to Iași to fly. At the same time, he praised the Romanian authorities for the way they managed to modernize the Iași airport.

“With all due respect to them – they have demonstrated that an airport, which was merely a ‘hangar’, has managed in a few years to serve not only a part of Romania, but also nearly a million citizens from the Republic of Moldova. It’s a clear demonstration: if you want to do it – you succeed. But if you just look for excuses, you end up with what we have today,” Usatii stated during an electoral meeting.

Located 150 kilometers from Chisinau, Marculesti Airport was transferred under the administration of Chisinau International Airport in July of this year, according to a decision of the Parliament. It is set to be modernized to operate both cargo transport flights and passenger flights. Authorities estimated that investments of approximately 4.2 million euros are needed. Presenting the project in the Parliament plenary, the Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development, Vladimir Bolea, mentioned that the airport could become operational for charter flights as early as this fall.
