Rocket fuel would have ended up in the Dniester River as a result of Russia’s attack on the Dniester Hydroelectric Station in the Chernivtsi region, and the pollution spread downstream. This was announced by the Ministry of Economy, Environment, and Agriculture of Ukraine, which specifies that the pollutants have even reached the area of the village of Naslavcea in northern Moldova, IPN reports.
According to Ukrainian authorities, spots of polluting substances were observed on March 10 in the area of Liadova village, in the Vinnytsia region. Immediately, the authorities of the Republic of Moldova were informed about the incident.
Emergency commissions have been convened in the Ukrainian regions of Vinnytsia and Odessa, which have established measures to limit and eliminate pollution. Among these are the installation of floating barriers and the use of sorbents for collecting oily substances from the water surface.
Ukrainian laboratories have taken water samples from several areas of the Dniester. Near the village of Nahoriani, an exceedance of 2.5 times the permissible level of petroleum substances was recorded.
During visual inspections, oily films were observed on the water surface and a persistent smell of technical oils was detected. The Ukrainian authorities specify that they are monitoring the evolution of pollution and that they have taken additional samples, including in the area of drinking water intake for the city of Odessa and in the Nistru estuary.
