In the Republic of Moldova, a complex surgical intervention to remove a tumor from the facial nerve was performed for the first time, using a complex technique to access the base of the skull through the ear area. The operation, carried out by doctors at the “Timofei Mosneaga” Republican Clinical Hospital, lasted about 10 hours, and the patient has already been discharged, reports IPN.
The patient, aged 53, had been diagnosed with an extensive tumor of the facial nerve, with rapid progression. The formation affected multiple anatomical segments. According to the medical institution, the use of the transcochlear approach allowed deep and controlled access to the tumor through the bone structures of the ear and skull base. Doctors say that the technique offers the possibility of removing the formation, while protecting important anatomical structures nearby.
The hospital representatives mention that this intervention demonstrates the capacity of the Moldovan medical system to perform advanced surgical procedures, comparable to those carried out in specialized international medical centers.
