Lawyers are calling off the general strike after President Maia Sandu returned the Law on the Legal Profession to Parliament for re-examination. The Lawyers’ Union states that it appreciates the decision not to enact the law, IPN reports.
“The Lawyers’ Union will continue to support the transposition into national legislation of European directives regarding the exercise of the legal profession in the member states of the European Union, as well as the changes necessary to modernize and adjust the legal framework regarding the legal profession to current realities”, the Union states in a press release.
President Maia Sandu sent the Law on the Bar for reexamination, on the grounds that “in the form adopted by Parliament, it does not provide sufficient solutions to the systemic problems of the bar, especially those related to integrity, transparency, meritocracy and ensuring citizens’ access to justice.”
The law would be reviewed by the next legislature, according to the specifications made by the head of state.
