Romania’s interim President Ilie Bolojan has promulgated a law allowing the shooting down of drones in Romanian airspace, IPN reports.

According to the law, unmanned aircraft flying in national airspace without authorization can be destroyed, neutralized or its flight can be taken under control.

At the same time, a new framework for cooperation and coordination will be created at the level of the authorities and institutions that are responsible for managing and monitoring the national airspace, as well as for ensuring compliance with the rules for its use, thus contributing to increased aviation safety and security.

According to the Romanian authorities, the adoption of this law underlines the authorities’ concern for national security in a tense geopolitical context, marked by the war in Ukraine and threats in the region. In the last two years, Romania’s Ministry of National Defense has reported more than 20 incidents in which drones launched by Russia over Ukraine came dangerously close to Romanian territory or even landed on Romanian soil.
