The European Union strongly supports Moldova on its path to reform and EU accession. This is enshrined in the Joint Declaration of the Republic of Moldova and the European Union, adopted at the first Moldova-EU Summit held in Chisinau. The document provides for accelerating the accession process, strengthening cooperation in the areas of security, energy, and digitalization, as well as major investments for economic development and strengthening the country’s democratic resilience, IPN reports.
The statement notes that Moldova and the EU express their joint support for peace, security, stability, and prosperity throughout Europe.
In its new statement, the EU condemns Russia’s aggression against Ukraine and its hybrid actions against Moldova. At the same time, the community reconfirms European support for the country’s sovereignty, stability, and economic development, including through the EU Partnership Mission in Moldova (EUPM) and other support instruments.
The document acknowledges Moldova’s efforts to strengthen the rule of law, judicial independence, and fight corruption. The statement highlights that these reforms are essential for European integration and strengthening democracy.
The European Union also welcomed the €1.9 billion Growth Plan for Moldova, aimed at stimulating sustainable development, job creation, and economic integration into the European Single Market, with an initial tranche of €270 million already disbursed.
The European Community has commended Moldova for its progress in energy security and diversification of energy sources, and the EU has given assurances that it will continue to support reforms in the sector, interconnection with the European market, and implementation of the acquis communautaire in this area.
The document condemns Russia’s attempts to undermine the elections in Moldova through electoral corruption, information interference, and external pressure, and emphasizes the importance of a free and fair electoral process with EU support. Similarly, the EU recognises Moldova’s potential as a regional transport hub and supports its active involvement in the Trans-European Transport Network for deep integration into the continental infrastructure.
The signatories reaffirmed their support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova within its internationally recognized borders and called for the withdrawal of all Russian military forces and ammunition from the Transnistrian region of Moldova.
