Japan Supports the Modernization of Taras Shevchenko school in Chisinau

On March 4, 2025, Ambassador Yamada Yoichiro, together with the Director of Public Association National Congress of Ukrainians from Moldova (NCUM), Mr. Dmitri Lecartev, signed a grant contract worth $91,039 USD, funded by the Government of Japan under the “Kusanone” Program.

Through Kusanone projects, the Government of Japan supports the local public institutions by providing small-scale grants.

Ambassador Yamada welcomed the project proposal by NCUM and noted that Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has continued for three years, Ambassador Yamada satated “Japan is committed to standing by Ukraine. We reiterate our support to the brave Ukrainians in their fight for the defense of their country. We support Moldova and its people that are offering warm assistance to Ukrainian refugees. We thank the Ukrainians for their bravery and sacrifice, which help the Republic of Moldova stay safe, help Europe remain safe, and help the international community by protecting the values and principles needed to maintain a just and peaceful world.

The “Kusanone” Human Security Grant Program was launched in Moldova in 2008. To date, Japan has provided non-repayable funding amounting to 7.6 million USD for 92 projects (excluding the new project) in the fields of health, education, and public utilities.

The former president of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, stated that the changes regarding the competences of the Gagauz autonomy in organizing elections do not represent an infringement on its status. “Gagauzia does not have enemies in Moldova,” Tănase declared in the show “Teritoria Svobodi” with Lilia Burakovski, reports IPN.

Alexandru Tanase also stated that Comrat is being “brazenly manipulated”. “I am very sorry that, after 30 years, other political parties are not normally represented there, and pro-Moscow oriented politicians control the situation in the autonomy”, clarified the former president of the Constitutional Court.

In his opinion, this is a backlog of Chisinau, for which the country will pay a high price due to the ignorance of the situation in the region.

He mentioned that, most likely, legislative changes will be made, according to which Chisinau will designate the electoral bodies itself that will organize the elections in Gagauzia – on the date set by the Popular Assembly.

“Gagauzia has no enemy in the Republic of Moldova. There is no politician – not even the most marginal – who would say that autonomy should be abolished or that certain competencies should be reduced,” concluded the former president of the Constitutional Court.
