Drivers in Romania will pay more for gasoline and diesel from January 1, 2026, due to new excise levels, reports IPN.
According to the measure established by the Ministry of Finance, the excise duty on gasoline increases from 2.78 to 3.06 Romanian lei per liter, on diesel – from 2.54 to 2.80. The price hikes come despite the fact that the price of oil has dropped by approximately 25% in 2025, from 80 to about 60 dollars per barrel.
According to the Romanian fiscal framework, the adjustment of excise duties is part of an annual updating mechanism. The mechanism is correlated with inflation and the state’s budgetary commitments.
The authorities in Bucharest justify the adjustment of excise duties by the need to ensure stable revenues for the state budget. At the same time, the goal is set to comply with European directives on the taxation of energy products. Simultaneously, these policies are correlated with environmental policies and the transition to less polluting forms of transport.
