The Republic of Moldova needs to strengthen its institutions, reduce the specialist deficit, and transform its relationship with Romania into a partnership based on concrete projects. These statements belong to the participants of the conference “Romania and the Republic of Moldova between common memory and European destiny”, reports IPN.

One of the major challenges remains the consolidation of institutions and increasing citizens’ trust in them, noted Mariana Iațco, associate professor at the State University of Moldova. She drew attention to the migration of specialists and elites, a phenomenon that affects the state’s ability to implement reforms and ensure efficient administration. In her opinion, the success of the European path depends on the development of functional institutions, based on meritocracy and self-governance.

During the debate, Raluca Moldovan, associate professor at the “Babes-Bolyai” University in Cluj-Napoca, mentioned that Moldova’s relationship with Romania needs to enter a new stage in the context of approaching the European Union. Until now, the emphasis has been predominantly on common identity and historical ties, but the future should bring more concrete initiatives in areas such as energy, transportation, and economic development.

“The bridges of flowers have played their role, but the new stage requires energy and institutional bridges,” stated the researcher, emphasizing also the importance of strengthening the rule of law.

Tana Foarfa, the director of Europuls, also spoke about the relationship between the two states. She appreciated the constant support offered by Romania to the Republic of Moldova, but noted that there were periods when cooperation could produce more visible results at a practical level.

The former president of the Constitutional Court, Alexandru Tanase, stated that the changes regarding the competences of the Gagauz autonomy in organizing elections do not represent an infringement on its status. “Gagauzia does not have enemies in Moldova,” Tănase declared in the show “Teritoria Svobodi” with Lilia Burakovski, reports IPN.

Alexandru Tanase also stated that Comrat is being “brazenly manipulated”. “I am very sorry that, after 30 years, other political parties are not normally represented there, and pro-Moscow oriented politicians control the situation in the autonomy”, clarified the former president of the Constitutional Court.

In his opinion, this is a backlog of Chisinau, for which the country will pay a high price due to the ignorance of the situation in the region.

He mentioned that, most likely, legislative changes will be made, according to which Chisinau will designate the electoral bodies itself that will organize the elections in Gagauzia – on the date set by the Popular Assembly.

“Gagauzia has no enemy in the Republic of Moldova. There is no politician – not even the most marginal – who would say that autonomy should be abolished or that certain competencies should be reduced,” concluded the former president of the Constitutional Court.
