The People’s Assembly of Gagauzia removed from the agenda of Friday’s meeting the approval of the composition of the Central Electoral Commission from Comrat. The judicial institutions and the Executive Committee did not present their candidates – without them, the electoral body cannot be constituted. Also, a new election date was proposed, but it was rejected. The deputies decided to make a “trade” with the Executive Committee to regain more powers that they currently do not hold, reports the IPN correspondent from Gagauzia.
The amendments of 2024 prohibited the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia from adopting laws after the expiration of its term. The current legislative term in Comrat expired on November 12, 2025. The Executive Committee contested the changes in court. Thus, through an agreement with it, the deputies could make changes to the legislation. What exactly they intend to change is not yet known. However, the deputies assure that this decision should unblock the conduct of elections in the People’s Assembly.
The socialist fraction of the People’s Assembly has proposed that the elections be set for May 17th. Many deputies have emphasized that this is unnecessary, as the decision could be challenged in court. The interim president of the People’s Assembly, Nicolai Ormanji, added that a special meeting will be convened to approve the members of the Central Electoral Commission and to set the election date.
The elections for the People’s Assembly were previously set for March 22, however, their organization has reached an impasse. On January 21, the Supreme Court of Justice admitted the appeal of the Comrat Territorial Office of the State Chancellery, suspending the decisions of the Gagauz People’s Assembly regarding the composition of the central electoral commission in Comrat. The decision blocked the conduct of the elections, as the new Electoral Code does not allow the establishment of bodies not provided by law, the national legislation regulating exclusively the activity of the Central Electoral Council of Gagauzia.
