Civic Platform “111” calls on the People’s Assembly of Gagauzia to ensure decision-making transparency regarding the organization of regional elections. During a press conference at IPN, the organization’s representatives warned that the current draft decision could jeopardize the region’s special legal status by establishing external control. They presented an alternative draft decision, arguing that it would respect Gagauzia’s status and ensure elections without legal conflicts.
Expert Oleg Toporas said during the press conference that, following an analysis, the civic platform had identified direct contradictions between the current draft decision and Gagauzia’s legal framework. He explained that the initial document introduces new conditions for forming the local Electoral Commission, such as the requirement to have at least seven members and mandatory vetting by the central authorities — mechanisms that are not found in the region’s current legislation and could block the organization of the elections.
In this context, Oleg Toporas presented an alternative draft decision, which he says preserves all of Gagauzia’s prerogatives and will ensure that the elections are held without legal conflicts. He called on the deputies of the People’s Assembly to examine both versions before making a decision.
The alternative draft is based on the following principles: fully preserving Gagauzia’s powers, ensuring full compliance with the Law on the Special Legal Status of the autonomous region, respecting the local Electoral Code, and ensuring that the elections are held without legal conflicts.
