On World Water Day, the Republic of Moldova reaffirms its commitment to the protection and sustainable management of water resources. The Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, argues that, during this period, the importance of water is highlighted not only as a resource, but also as an essential element for life, safety and balance, reports IPN.
The official referred to the alert status on the Dniester, after oil leaks occurred in the river and, consequently, residents from the north of the country were disconnected from the water supply.
“On World Water Day, we look with gratitude towards those who were on the front line on the Dniester, working tirelessly to protect people, nature and our future. Water unites us, but it also makes us responsible. Let’s value it, let’s protect it,” added the minister.
The main sources of water in Moldova are the Nistru and Prut rivers. According to the Environmental Agency, the Nistru provides approximately 54% of the country’s total needs, being the main strategic source, while the Prut covers about 16%. Underground sources contribute with 23% of the needs, through over 5 thousand probes and 132 thousand wells.
