Moldovan athletes who achieve results at international competitions in the Under-22 and Under-23 age categories will be honoured from the state budget. In order to cover the payments, the government has approved the addition to the financial rules on sports activity, IPN reports.
Athletes aged between 17 and 23 taking part in Olympic or non-Olympic events, as well as their coaches, will benefit from official recognition of their performances.
Until now, Moldovan athletes in the U-21, U-22 and U-23 categories were honoured by analogy with youth athletes, which did not correctly reflect the importance of these competitions in the international structure. With the amendment, clear rules are established for rewarding the results obtained, depending on the age category and the importance of the competition.
The measure allows the Ministry of Education and Research to award prizes in cash or artefacts, depending on the value of the performance and within the limits of the available budget, at the request of national sports federations.
According to the authorities, this decision recognises the efforts of Moldovan athletes who succeed in international competitions in the intermediate age categories, thus ensuring fair treatment in the award system and encouraging the continuity of sports performance.
