The unilateral decision of the USA to lift sanctions on Russian oil exports is worrying and could affect European security. The statement was made by the President of the European Council, António Costa, in the context where the USA has granted a 30-day waiver for the purchase of Russian oil already on board ships, reports IPN.
According to the European official, maintaining economic pressure on Russia is essential to persuade Moscow to accept serious negotiations for a fair and lasting peace in Ukraine. In a message posted on social networks, António Costa warned that easing sanctions could strengthen Russia’s economic resources and allow it to continue the war of aggression against Ukraine.
Previously, the US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, explained that the exemption aims to stabilize the energy markets affected by the tensions generated by the war in the Middle East. The authorization is valid until April 11 and is part of a series of measures adopted by the Trump administration, to alleviate the pressure on the energy market, following the disruptions of transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the main routes of oil and gas export globally.
