The alert status on the Dniester river has been lifted, but pollution prevention interventions continue. Specialized teams are carrying out maintenance and replacement work on the protective dams. This was announced by the Minister of Environment, Gheorghe Hajder, who specified that the situation remains under surveillance, reports IPN.
The Minister emphasized that, although the alert has been lifted, intervention actions continue to prevent risks. “There are still certain quantities of petroleum products that have been deposited on the shore, either in vegetation, and others are still to come, but in much smaller quantities,” Gheorghe Hajder clarified for the press.
According to the official, the authorities continue to check the quality of the water, as traces of petroleum products have been detected in certain areas. In this context, samples are taken periodically to prevent potential risks to the population and to maintain quality parameters within the allowed limits.
The Minister mentioned that the impact on the environment is limited, without extensive effects. Although isolated cases that affect the fauna may occur, most habitats on the Dniester remain safe and the situation is under the control of the authorities.
Following the attacks on March 7 on the Novodnestrovsk hydroelectric power station, Ukraine, petroleum products have ended up in the Dniester river. As a result, the authorities have established an environmental alert on the Dniester basin.
