Several European leaders, including the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and French President Emmanuel Macron, have announced that they will join Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in a meeting with American President, Donald Trump, at the White House, reports IPN.
“This afternoon, I will welcome Zelensky to Brussels. Together, we will participate in the video meeting of the “Coalition of the Willing.” At President Zelensky’s request, I will attend tomorrow’s meeting with President Trump and other European leaders at the White House”, Ursula von der Leyen wrote on Sunday on the X network.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will also travel to Washington on Monday and has confirmed that he will be among the participants at the White House meeting, according to the BBC. The delegation is also expected to include Finnish President Alexander Stubb. The Independent notes on its website that Stubb, who has a close relationship with Trump, will be present to prevent any tensions between the Ukrainian and American presidents. The international press reports that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni will also participate in the talks.
The meeting at the White House comes after Friday’s summit in Alaska between Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, where, although they appreciated the progress made, they failed to reach an agreement on ending the fighting in Ukraine. According to international media reports, the White House leader is preparing a trilateral summit with Vladimir Putin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy for Friday, August 22.
