The Bashkan of Gagauzia, Evghenia Gutul, will be placed under house arrest. This decision was made by the Chișinău Court, Ciocana branch, IPN reports.
Prosecutors had requested to extend her preventive detention in the remand center for another 30 days. During the consideration of the prosecutors’ request, dozens of her supporters gathered outside the courthouse, chanting slogans in her support. Gutul was physically present at the court hearing. In the corridors of the court, Guțul told journalists that she had requested the court session to be public. The Bashkan of Gagauzia was detained at Chișinău International Airport on the evening of March 25.
She is involved in two criminal cases. In one of them, she is accused of fraudulent management of electoral funds, illegal financing, and making false statements during the electoral campaign for the election of the Bashkan of Gagauzia.
In the other case, law enforcement authorities accuse Evghenia Guțul and the secretary of the Central Office of the former Șor party of being complicit in the illegal financing of the political party and an electoral competitor on behalf of an organized criminal group.
