The European Union is set to adopt on Monday its 20th package of sanctions against Russia, in the context of the aggression in Ukraine. The announcement was made by the head of European diplomacy, Kaja Kallas, reports IPN.
Kaja Kallas stated at a press conference on Friday that Europe’s security is more uncertain than in recent decades, noting that Russia represents a major threat. According to the European official, while the Russian army is in Ukraine, Moscow’s hybrid war is intensifying on the European continent, including through cyber attacks, sabotage, and drone incursions.
The new package of measures was presented on February 6 by the European Commission and targets, among others, the banking sector, by sanctioning 20 Russian banks, as well as restricting the use of cryptocurrencies, platforms, and companies involved in the trading of virtual currencies. Furthermore, the sanctions will be extended to banks in third countries, which facilitate trade with previously sanctioned goods.
The measures are set to be adopted by the foreign ministers of the member states of the community bloc, who will meet on Monday, February 23, in Brussels. After adoption, they will be translated into all 24 official languages of the community bloc and published in the Official Journal of the EU, at which point they will come into effect.
