Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has promulgated a law defining the concept of “genocide against the Soviet people” committed during World War II, IPN reports.
A Kremlin press release says the federal law will regulate the preservation of the memory, security and maintenance of the graves of the victims of that genocide. It also establishes a mechanism to search for burial sites and mass graves to honor the victims.

According to statistics, more than 26 million citizens of the former USSR, including eight million soldiers, died during World War II.
