An underground construction has been identified in the central area of Leova. The National Archaeological Agency has inspected the discovery and found it to be a vaulted cellar, over 150 years old.
The cellar was discovered after a concrete slab collapsed in the area where the cultural center is located. Upon examination on the spot, it was found that the underground cellar had at least one entrance and was made of brick.
In addition to the main space, there is a descending gallery leading down to a lower level of the room.
The structure of the building is typical of the cellars or cellars used to store food or wine barrels in modern times and is over 150 years old.
The responsible authorities have submitted the request to the Leova public administration to conduct an archaeological survey, Sergiu Heghea, deputy director of the National Archaeological Agency, told IPN.
„We will have more details if an archaeological research will be conducted. At the same time, we have come up with a number of recommendations for the Leova City Hall”, Sergiu Heghea said.
„The construction is a valuable example of underground functional architecture, typical of towns and fairs of the modern period in the south of the Republic of Moldova”, notes the National Archaeological Agency.
The City Hall of Leova has been recommended to include this objective in a conservation program for the cultural valorization of the cellar. For this, it is mandatory to follow the preliminary steps of an archaeological investigation and a detailed architectural survey.
