40 Moldovan exporters operating on the US market today attended talks at the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization to analyze the impact of Washington’s new tariffs, applied globally, including on products of Moldovan origin, IPN reports.
Company representatives noted the importance of maintaining and strengthening Moldova’s position in global value chains, especially in the automotive and textile sectors, where a possible reduction in European demand for the US market could generate additional indirect losses for Moldovan exporters.
„It is very difficult to immediately estimate the impact we will feel. We believe that we need to further expand into alternative markets, for example the European market, to ensure that our products remain competitive,” said the director of the National Office of Vine and Wine, Stefan Iamandi, quoted in a press release issued by the ministry.
„Partially, the US market will absorb the shock of the new prices, because in the juice sector, the US does not have its own production of concentrated drinks. An alternative market for us would be first of all the European Union and we can also analyze the market of the Asian continent,” said Mircea Manoli, director of the Association of Processors in the Food Industry “Speranta Con”.
„Only today we have started to understand what the real situation is and how the new tariffs that have come into force apply. The next few days we are going to understand how the new rules work and what is the impact on our business,” said fashion designer Iulia Allert, whose clothing brand is successful in the US, UK and EU markets.
The ministry will support and assess the impact on each concrete product and propose adapting to the new tariffs. In the meantime, experts are analyzing alternative markets for the products affected by the new tariffs, the same press release said.
Moldova’s exports to the United States in 2024 accounted for 2.5% of the country’s total exports, or $90 million, while imports from the US made up 1.5% of total imports, or $135 million.
Most Moldovan products exported to the US are dessert wines, fruit juices, especially apple juice, as well as plastic devices, transportation goods, alcohol, pastries and textile confections.
